This last connection reduces the chance of sparking near the battery. Start the donor car and let it idle for a couple of minutes to send some charge across. Try starting the dead car; if it does not crank, wait a bit longer and try again with a little throttle on the donor to raise alternator output. Once the dead car starts, let both run for a minute, then remove the cables in reverse order: black from the grounded metal, black from the donor negative, red from donor positive, and red from the formerly dead battery. Avoid letting clamps touch anything as you remove them. Keep the revived car running to build charge.
